Cape Cod Open Space Priority Parcel Project, Association to Preserve
Cape Cod
Only 12% of the land left on Cape Cod is considered to be developable. Cape Cod is a peninsula with finite resources, and how the Cape deals with a rapid growth rate will serve as a test case for the rest of the country. In 2004, Kate Kennen worked with the Associate to Preserve Cape Cod to conduct a study to determine which non-protected parcels on the Cape Cod are most critical to save in the future as open space. GIS data was collected and combined from 10 regional habitat and water studies to prioritize which parcels APCC deamed critical to maintain natural resources. KKLA* helped run the Geographic Information Systems analysis on this data and produce maps to serve as resources for town planners, land banks, and land trusts. One map for each Town on the Cape was produced. Each map ranks critical developable and underdeveloped parcels that have habitat and water value.
* Work by KKLA was completed during a Whitlock Internship with the Association to Preserve Cape Code
