Linking LIFE: Living Independently Forever Incorporated (LIFE) Campus Landscape Strategy Mashpee, MA

LIFE Mashpee is a non-profit organization that provides community services and independent living for adults with learning challenges. Residents living on the LIFE campus have a range of mental and/or physical disabilities and require different social and campus living needs. Built over the past 20 years, the existing Mashpee LIFE campus is currently a non-engaging environment for its residents with no centralized outdoor community areas. KKLA was hired by LIFE to design a campus landscape strategy to create a thriving landscape for education, activity, and play. After a series of charrette session with residents, parents, and staff, a prioritized list of needs and goals was created. The resulting landscape strategy creates a phased plan of small projects that LIFE can take on in small pieces. Therapeutic garden spaces, a new campus quad and a common area for vegetable growing were designed to get residents outdoors and foster community. Xeriscape and low maintenance gardening principals were used to create a sustainable landscape.
